15-20 National Ophthalmology Hospital Center

A national public health institution specializing in ophthalmology, the Hôpital national des 15-20 provides the missions of a university hospital: care, teaching, research and prevention.

A hospital dedicated to ophthalmology, the 15-20 has become, over time, the national and international reference in the treatment of vision pathologies.

Linked by hospital-university partnership agreement with the AP-HP, it is organized around the four hospital-university ophthalmology departments of professors BAUDOUIN, BORDERIE, NORDMANN and PAQUES.

The organization of 15-20 is entirely focused on the management of eye diseases and the practice of surgical operations: cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, retina, glaucoma, corneal transplant, retina, myopia , strabismus, lacrimal passages, eyelids, uveitis, tumors…

The care offer is built around three specialized centers for glaucoma, cornea (including refractive surgery and keratoconus) and retina, which complement the ophthalmology consultation center, and offers, in addition to emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the management of most ophthalmological pathology, whether medical, surgical or neuro-ophthalmological. An internal medicine department completes this range of care.

Its hospitalization capacity is divided between traditional hospitalization (79 beds, including 17 dedicated to the management of infectious eye diseases), and 53 day surgery places.

Ambulatory activity has developed actively in recent years and in 2020 represents more than 86.36% of the hospital's overall surgical activity. More than 87% of glaucoma surgery (including combined glaucoma and cataract) is performed on an outpatient basis.

The surgical teams perform the most innovative techniques and procedures in the nine operating theaters equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. The hospital also has two block rooms dedicated exclusively to intravitreal injections, two refractive surgery rooms and a minor surgery block.

The specialized technical platform (ophthalmo-biology laboratory, neuro-imaging department equipped with an MRI device unique in Europe and a latest-generation scanner, approved pharmacy for the production and dispensing of specialized eye drops provides medical teams with and surgery complete and specialized medical-technical support).

In 2020, there were 16,336 hospital stays, more than 228,000 consultations and additional procedures and 45,683 emergency visits.

Since 2008, the hospital has been home to the Vision Institute, whose purpose is not only to promote fundamental research on vision, but also to enable the development of companies involved in the prevention and treatment of eye conditions.

The 15-20 National Hospital is regularly placed among the three best ophthalmology centers in France and in Europe (Le Point ranking).

The hospital also manages the Residence Saint Louis dedicated to the accommodation of blind or visually impaired people.
